Yes it's that time of year again, time to celebrate the influence design plays in our lives and in particular how the design and innovation happening in Australia is competing at a global level.

This years Design Award of the Year went to the Blackmagic Cinema Camera, designed completely in Australia by the crew at Black Magic Design.  In a showcase of Australian design at it's best, the Cinema Camera looks to redefine the film-making industry by making professional grade camera equipment available to the everyday user.  The Cinema Camera is priced around 5 times less than existing film-quality equipment while it's simple to use interface makes it easily accessible to the general public.  To read more about this revolution in the cinema industry see Blackmagicdesign.

Environmentally it was nice to see an Australian company return to the top of the accolades taking out the Design Award for Sustainability. Tractile is an interlocking roof system that weighs around 25% less than that of current roof tiles and uses between 1/5th to 1/8th of the energy required to produce it.  On top of that Tractile is also available as the world's first Building Integrated Photovoltaic Thermal (BIPV-T) roof tile meaning that it can produce both electricity and solar boosted hot water from a single tile.  Set to redefine the building industry around the world, this is fantastic example of how innovation, driven by the demands of the Australian climate, is helping to produce world class technology.  To read more about the benefits of the Tractile roofing system see Tractile.

To top off these category leading wins 7 out of 12 of the products nominated for the top prize were designed in Australia.  This not only illustrates the capability of the design industry in Australia but also that Australian companies recognise the value and importance design and innovation plays in building a successful business.  Other Australian designs to be recognised for good design include the QuickLay Fire Attack Pack for fire-fighters - Design Award®, PRED9X purpose built firearm mounted light - Design Award® Best in Category, Taste Mobile Kitchen Service from the Benevolent Society - Design Award® Best in Category Service Design and WiTouch wearable TENS pain relief device - Design Award® Best in Category.  For all of the award winners see the 2013 Australian International Design Awards.
